Working with RAKE to help youngsters with Special Needs
Working together with the Romanian authorities, the project was a great success until 2010 when RAKE handed it over to the Romanian authorities. Sadly and unbelievably they closed the home and returned the youngsters back to the institution.
Despite the passing of time and Romania joining the EU, RAKE were horrified to find that the quality of life for residents in the institution remained unchanged. They are largely confined to their dormitories, have no personal belongings and no activities. Sedation is widely used and beatings are common.
Humanity at Heart has provided funding to furnish the house, and make it ready for the youngsters to move in, as well as committing to pay part of the salary of a support worker. We will keep you posted on the progress of this excellent project.

Please come along, have a cup of tea and a chat with our Trustees, volunteers and Shop manager. See photos from our projects in Romania, and talk to people who really know how the money raised here in Hassocks is helping people in a long term, meaningful way. Elderly Community Care
This year we are running a Christmas Appeal for the Elderly Community Care project. We are asking that you donate £10 that will provide a food parcel for one of the elderly people in our program. With prices rising and the meagre pension barely able to cover necessities the elderly people near our centre are delighted to receive any help. Last year we were able to ensure that each one had a parcel of basic items of food. They also received items of clothing and a shoe box gift thanks to Link Romania. Please show them you care this Christmas and donate £10.

Elderly Community Care
House renovation project.
During the last three weeks of September one of the volunteers who is part of the Elderly Community Care project, organised a team of young people to decorate Mrs Ana Buruiana’s home.
This activity was done as part of the project “ Elderly Community Care” which is funded by Humanity at Heart and run from The Hope for the Colony Community Centre in Petrosani, Romania. The project aims to enable local people to become involved in activities to help the elderly poor in their area.
The project started in November 2010 and four volunteers take care of 20 elderly people (5 each). They visit them regularly, spend time socialising and discuss how else they can help. With support from the centre the elderly can then take part in programmes which includes free glasses, cultural & social events and receive material help such as clothing, food parcels (when funds allow) and a shoe box at Christmas.
The young people with the key volunteer raised the funds to buy the paint and other items. They thoroughly scrubbed and prepared the walls and then painted them.
Mrs Buruiana now has a lovely clean home thanks to all their hard work! What a great team effort.
